Alkermes is a liquor made from alcohol and spices, which is from Italy. It was created in the Middle Ages, and was originally used as a drug. The original Alkermes recipe included alcohol, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves and iris, which were all mixed with sugar and water.
